Lonely Planet Review

Quotes You can leave the laptop and hairdryer at home and enjoy this quiet, eco-friendly getaway in a remote and picturesque mountain hamlet. The restored stone village of Milia is one of the most atmospheric and peaceful places to stay in Crete.

Reached by a dirt road, the village is on a 120-hectare (300-acre) site at an altitude of 500m. Thirteen abandoned farmhouses have been meticulously reconstructed in the original style using traditional materials, ecological principles and a 'back to nature' philosophy. Some rooms are built right into the rock and the whole village blends well into the surrounding environment. The cottages have wood heating, while thick stone walls provide insulation in summer. There's no electricity, only basic lighting, candles and solar hot water. The cottages are decorated with antique beds and old furniture found in the neighbouring villages. The excellent taverna has great views over the valley below and serves honest, traditional seasonal cooking. They use mostly organic produce including oil, wine, milk, cheese, free-range chickens, goats and sheep.

How To Get There

From Hania airport 65 km and from the port 60km. From the center of Hania 55 km. From Heraklion 240km. Driving the National road to the western part of Hania to Kissamos region. At the end of National road in the entrance of Kissamos Town turn left to The south direction to Elafonisi beach.Passing through the villages, Kaloudiana, Potamida, Voulgaro, Topolia(where a tunel is and the Topolian Gorge) and Katsomatados.Three km after Katsomatados you turn right to Vlatos and Milia. You'll see the signs point your direction. The last 2,5 km is an earthern road, ok for a normal car, but you have to drive carefully. Local transportation does not working very good. Only in summer period there are two buses from Hania to Elafonisi who stop nearby Vlatos so we could pick up some people who travel with bus. Normally there is one bus every day except weekends at about 12:45 starts from Hania Central station. See also in www.milia.gr in Route - arrival section for more info.

Tha thelame na pame ston paradosiako ikismo Milia. We would like to go to Milia traditional settlement. Posa chiliometra makria ine? How many km far from here? Pos pigenoume sto Elafonisi? How could we go to Elafonisi beach?

Author Tip

You can take part in the day-to-day operations of the farm and vineyard or attempt the walking trails around the village. There are also many traditional villages nearby to explore. Visit the unusual chapel in the Agia Sofia cave, then head to the fishermen's taverns at Sfinari beach for fresh fish by the sea. Take a day trip to stunning Elafonisi beach, stopping at the Hrysospiliotissa monastery.

Curious Fact

The people who run Milia refuse to serve Coke as a protest at American hegemony.
