Once you get past the unconsciously retro furnishings, this upmarket hotel does prove its worth as one of La Paz's venerable grand dames. It bills itself as the highest five-star hotel in the world. It has the oxygen tanks to prove it.

If you're a child of the '70s you'll feel right at home five-star property: think black marble bathrooms and shag-pile carpet thicker than the chest hair of a cabaret crooner. To be fair, however, despite the retro fittings, this upscale place maintains its quality reputation with a raft of services, reliable restaurants and a few nice homely touches, such as free bottled water and tissues in every room. They're even trying to move with the times - floors nine and ten have been newly enabled for wi-fi Internet access. The standard of facilities overall justifies the top-end rates, and service does come with a smile. Best of all, however, is the location - a short stroll down to Plaza San Francisco with the city's main attractions within just a few blocks walking distance.
