Lonely Planet Review

Quotes If you're going to stick the word 'boutique' into your name you better back it up. Ainavas does that by matching the design of each room with the colourful Latvian landscape photo hanging over the bed. The restaurant, shamelessly flaunting ancient exposed brick, also has heaps of character.

It's a great ruse, but the pricey standard rooms are a tad too small to justify its reputation as one of Riga's elite hotels. It's not far off though, thanks to thoughtful touches like attractive duvet covers, complimentary massage lotion, candles and heated floors in the bathroom and the softest, fluffiest towels Latvia has to offer. And if you're willing to pay a bit more, the deluxe rooms and suites have plenty of space. The riverside location on the edge of Old Town is enviable but even more enviable is the building, a 15th-century town house with the original thick wooden front door intact. Walk through that door and you'll find yourself in a lobby that is warm both figuratively (thanks to low ceilings spanned by wooden beams) and literally (thanks to a roaring fireplace). Avoid the street-side rooms on weekends when two nearby nightclubs crank music all night.

Author Tip

You're 'down by the river,' as Neil Young would say, so take advantage by walking 10 minutes over the Akmens Bridge to get a view of Old Town from the other side of the Dauagava. If that seems daunting, carb-load first at Salt n' Pepper, an American-style bar & grill with good food but an annoying propensity to get your order wrong.
