Lonely Planet Review

Quotes If you're tired of hotels that mimic a European ambience, Le Djenné offers an antidote as it's easily Bamako's most charismatic hotel. Local and West African artists were given free rein to decorate this place - think masks, statues, African colour schemes and architectural flourishes that are rooted strongly in local culture.

The cheapest rooms have a dark, corridor vibe, but the better ones are spacious and relaxing and awash in woodcarvings and cushioned sofas that seem to grow out from the walls. The mosquito nets on the beds are also something you'll appreciate. Everything about this place is highly original; the overall aesthetic beautifully evokes the sense of being in the home of an African village chief, while showcasing the sophistication of West African high culture. The decorative flourishes overflow into the public areas. Le Djennés location is also an essential part of the experience, being one that is strongly rooted in local culture. The surrounding streets offer countless vignettes of African street life.

Author Tip

Wander through the utterly inspiring local streets of Missira and down to the Route de Koulikoro, where you'll find San Toro, Bamako's most atmospheric restaurant also owned by those who brought you Le Djenné. The food is pure African and spectacularly good, while there's superb live kora music from 20:00. Just like at the hotel, no alcohol is served here, but the juice list is epic in scale.
