Lonely Planet Review

Quotes The Mande wins the prize for the nicest location of any hotel in Bamako. Yes, it's a long way from the city centre but its perch on a quiet stretch of the Niger River riverbank is outstanding.

Although the best views are reserved for the restaurant - the bungalow-style rooms are set back behind the large swimming pool - the grounds and green are expansive and take full advantage of this prime patch of Bamako real estate. It has to be said that you won't award any prizes for the service, which is willing but somewhat distracted. The OK rooms won't exactly rock your world and the bathrooms are in particular need of a loving overhaul. But after you dump your bags and kick back by the water's edge as a punted pirogue (wooden canoe) appears as if from village Africa and glides across the water, you'll soon understand why this place is a favourite rest-stop for tour groups and independent travellers alike.

Author Tip

Unless you've spent any time in Bamako, you may not realise how rare such a location is - much of Bamako seems to turn inward and few riverside properties take full advantage of their proximity to one of Africa's most evocative rivers. Spend as much time as you can here, watching the waters drift by.

Curious Fact

Michael Palin stayed here while filming his BBC Sahara series; the hotel is owned by Salif Keita, Mali's most famous footballer (no, he's not the same Salif Keita who makes some of Mali's best music).
