Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Tucked away in the quiet streets of Niaréla, the Sarama is an excellent choice that's all the more attractive because it sees far fewer tourists than it deserves. Rooms are spacious, quiet and attractively furnished and the super-friendly management is a plus.

The only downside about this place is that its prices could be lower, but the same could be said for many Bamako hotels. The swimming pool - think your bathtub back home, with just an extra square metre or two - is not a place to do laps, but is fine if you have it to yourself and just want to cool off. It's also a well-run place which ensures that both public areas and the rooms themselves are spotless. The location - a short taxi ride from the centre but far removed from the bustle of downtown Bamako - is also ideal for those who like their hotels to be away from noise and dust but wholly a part of the local community.

Author Tip

Leave behind the quiet streets of Niaréla (don't worry, you can come back later) for the busyness of Rue 376, where schoolchildren, women washing clothes and men lounging in the shade abound. Ramshackle African streets yield to the large mansions of Cité du Niger and, before you know it, you're at the Mandé Hotel which is ideal for a quiet drink on the banks of the Niger River.
