Lonely Planet Review

Quotes A couple of minutes from the centre of the Pham Ngu Lao backpacking area, the Liberty 4 offers many of the services of a big hotel for a pretty reasonable price. The service is especially good for a government-run abode, and rooms are comfortable if not inspiring.

With 71 rooms it's one of the biggest hotels in the area and is popular with tour groups. The comfortable carpeted rooms have a simple hotel decor look to them with a variety of bedspreads with chintzy flowers or tacky 'Modern' emblazoned across them reminding you that you're in a Vietnamese hotel. Bathrooms are small, and there is little difference between the standard and superior rooms, but deluxe rooms are worth the extra dollars for the balcony overlooking the park. What you get here that you won't find in most other Pham Ngu Lao places is a decent top-floor restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating and panoramic views, buffet breakfast, bar, massage centre, sauna and jacuzzi, salon and, on the 6th floor, free wi-fi Internet connections (be sure to request this if you need it).

Author Tip

A few minutes walk west is Thai Binh Market, a mainly local affair where vegetables, meat and various plastic items are sold. Having been here and noted the prices, walk east to Ben Thanh Market for a more touristy experience, with conical hats, ao dais (traditional Vietnamese dresses), great coffee and any other souvenir you can imagine. Both have food stalls serving tasty Vietnamese food.
