Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Hotel Norbu Linka is a modern, secluded place with a vague Tibetan feel, on the fringes of Thamel. The opulent suites are great for families and the restaurant is open 24 hours, so if you are jet lagged and have kids, look no further. The brochure even boasts 'baby sitters on request'!

This Tibetan-run hotel is down an alley opposite the interesting Thamel Gaa Hiti, one of the city's old water tanks, so it's a quiet and interesting part of the city but just a couple of minutes from the shops and cafes of central Thamel. The hotel architecture could charitably be termed 'grey soviet socialist concrete' and the modern rooms aren't as Tibetan as you'd expect from the name, but rooms are clean, comfortable and spacious with private bathroom. Breakfast on the rooftop garden area is a great start to the day. It's not a remarkable stay but it's friendly and central, and after a hard day of touring the amazing sights around Kathmandu, that's just what you need.

Author Tip

Go shopping for thangkas (paintings), pashminas (wool shawl), books, DVDS and trekking gear in nearby Thamel and check out the nearby Aroma Garden, one of Kathmandu's sweetest smelling shops, for essential oils, soaps and incense. The nearby Trattoria Nuovo Marco Polo is a good spot for dinner.

Curious Fact

Norbu Linka means 'Jewelled Garden' and is named after the Dalai Lama's former summer residence in Lhasa.
