Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Drifting off to sleep to the haunting sounds of evening prayers probably isn't what you'd associate with Lhasa, but this friendly Nepalese-operated place is one of the best-run upper-budget places and offers a great refuge in the middle of the interesting Muslim quarter.

Hotel rooms are much of a muchness in Lhasa, so it's the management that generally makes a place; in this case an enthusiastic and helpful Nepali Muslim. The rooms are spacious, modern and clean and there are some nice touches such as a minibar at local-shop prices, a stock of foreign magazines and a laundry service. The decent but slightly cramped dorms out the back (with attached toilet and shared hot shower) offer a quiet alternative to Lhasa's backpacker hotels. There's also a decent (if not very cosy) restaurant here, with chefs direct from Kathmandu. Best of all, the friendly reception staff can help you with almost anything you might need, from soft sleeper train tickets or an extra pillow to cans of oxygen to ease an altitude headache.

Author Tip

Grab a plate of Xinjiang-style noodles at the Muslim Restaurant across the square then follow the Tibetan pilgrims southwest down the Lingkhor to the Ani Sangkhung Nunnery for a cup of sweet milky tea in its wonderful Tibetan-style teahouse. Alternatively, head north for five minutes to Dropenling, home to the best handicrafts in Lhasa.
