Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Riding the downtown development wave, NH, a Spanish chain of smart business hotels, installed one of its DF branches smack in the center, around the corner from the Zócalo. The recently opened Centro address offers sleek, sexy accommodations for business travelers.

The aerodynamic 1940s structure retains the original sign identifying it as the Thermidor building, with suites at the curved corners. Lobby, lounges and rooms get a Euro-minimal look normally associated with much pricier digs: black hardwood floors and desk, futuristic furniture in iMac white, transparent light fixtures, textured bedspreads and bathroom sinks set into glass panels. A similarly stylish 5th-floor restaurant serves jazzy variations on Mexican fare. English-speaking staff in tight-fitting dark blue outfits strike a professional and personable demeanor. Online rates are a terrific deal, with luxury amenities for less than what typical midrange places charge.

Author Tip

Start with a traditional Mexican breakfast at El Cardenal, two blocks north (you may run into the mayor and his staff, who chart policy over chilaquiles and chocolate here). Then head west along Madero; the stately avenue boasts a catalogue of architectural styles. Be sure to visit the Museo del Estanquillo, at Isabel La Católica, housing the pop culture collection of essayist Carlos Monsivais.
