Hotel New Bengal

Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Probably the best bargain stay in Mumbai, this neat city hotel is Bengali-owned and many guests are visiting traders from Kolkata. Appropriately, there's a Bengali restaurant on-site and you can choose from clean boxrooms with shared bath or private rooms with small en suites.

Mumbai isn't known for its accommodation bargains but the New Bengal Hotel is an exception. Traders and tourists are lured here by the bargain rates and the house restaurant, Howrah, where you can sample classic Bengali cooking beneath a tacky yet charming model of Howrah Bridge. It's a no frills place, but that doesn't mean sharing the room with unwelcome fauna. Rooms are bright, clean and well-cared for, and both the shared and private bathrooms have hot showers. Service extends to towels and miniature soap in the rooms - almost unheard of in this price bracket. The location - mid-way between CST station and Crawford Market - isn't bad for the myriad attractions of Fort, though it's a bit of a stagger if you've just come off the train with heavy bags.

Author Tip

Drop your bags off in your room and enjoy a well-deserved hot shower before you head upstairs for a Bengali snack at Howrah, the house restaurant. After dark, stroll down to one of the upmarket Mangalorean seafood places in Fort and take in a Hindi blockbuster at one of the cinemas around Marzaban Rd.
