Lonely Planet Review

Quotes This is a friendly, though slightly frayed, place in the centre of the most happening area of the Latin Quarter. It's popular with a slightly older crowd than it was when it opened as Paris' first independent hostel some two decades ago.

The hostel rooms are shut tight between 11:00 and 16:00 for cleaning but reception stays open and there is no longer any curfew. Rooms accommodate three to 10; dormitories can feel a little cramped. Some of the rooms for two people have bunk beds while others have double beds; rates vary according to the season. In summer, the best way to get a bed is to stop by at about 08:00. The hostel is nonsmoking everywhere but the reception area, and Internet access cost 2.00 for 30 minutes.

Author Tip

Rue Mouffetard is the city's most photogenic market street, and it's the place where Parisians send tourists (real travellers go to the Marché Bastille north of Bastille).

Curious Fact

The name of Rue Mouffetard comes from the French mofette for 'skunk'.
