Lonely Planet Review

Quotes A short walk up from the Colosseum, this is a chic but refreshingly unpretentious hotel. The look is modern - an eye-catching ensemble of neutral backgrounds, colourful furniture and bold artwork - and rooms are spacious and sunny. There's a charming terrace, a small gym, disabled access and attentive staff.

It's a little way off the beaten tourist track, but the Capo d'Africa is well worth tracking down. It must be one of the capital's best-looking hotels. The entrance, guarded by two towering palm trees, is set in a formal 19th-century façade, and inside, the lobby is a salad of sunlight, purples, browns and maroons. Rooms are stylish, featuring blanched wood decor and crimson leather armchairs and sofas. They vary in size - in a former life they were all classrooms - but by Roman standards are big. Throughout, great care has been taken to incorporate comfort into the grand design, so while beds have polished-wood headpieces they are firm with top quality linen. Bathrooms sport grey marble sinks and soft, fluffy towels. Service is top-notch and the location is quiet. The 2nd floor is completely non-smoking.

Author Tip

You've got a choice. You can either go downhill to the Colosseum, Arco di Costantino and nearby Palatine and forums, or you can go the other way up to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano. For a peaceful walk head up to Villa Celimontana park - take Via Claudia from behind the Colosseum.
