Lonely Planet Review

Quotes A stately old pile in the heart of Rome's designer shopping district, the Hotel D'Inghilterra is a throwback to a bygone age. A favourite of Liszt, Mendelssohn and Hemingway, its rooms are full of heavy fabrics and gilt-framed paintings, solid-wood furniture and large tabletop lamps.

The one-time town house of the Torlonia princes, it claims to be one of the 100 most beautiful hotels in the world. Certainly it boasts an elegant look and an enviable position - it is right next to a Valentino boutique, not five minutes from Piazza di Spagna. On the 1st floor you'll find bright, high-ceilinged sitting rooms with chandeliers, healthy-looking palms and plump sofas; a wood-panelled bar; and the in-house restaurant. Spread over the next four floors, the 97 guestrooms vary in size and decor although none escape the classical theme. Those on the 5th floor are generally smaller, with sloping roofs and exposed wooden beams, but have their own private balconies, a pleasure worth paying for. Mod cons are discreetly incorporated and service is efficient.

Author Tip

Give your wallet a work-out in the swanky designer boutiques lined up outside the hotel - start with Valentino next door. Alternatively make for the Ara Pacis Augustae, ensconced in Richard Meier's sparkling new museum, due to open in April 2006.
