Lonely Planet Review

Quotes Built on top of a theatre that Pompey constructed in 55 BC (now the basement breakfast room), this family-run hotel is small and atmospheric. Particularly attractive are the rooms on the 3rd floor with sloping wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta floor tiles and tasteful, dark wood furniture.

It's one thing to breakfast overlooking ancient ruins, it's quite another to sip a cappuccino whilst sitting in an ancient Roman theatre. But that's just what you do at this delightful hotel, not even a soliloquy away from Campo de' Fiori. Go down the stairs at the back of the bar to the low barrel-vaulted grey-brick halls beneath and you're literally walking back in time. Upstairs, the 12 spacious rooms are more modern and more comfortable - six look out onto the street, six overlook an internal courtyard. The former enjoy a better view but the latter are much quieter and, in this neck of the woods, noise can be a problem. Staff are friendly and efficient, although even they are helpless to stop the racket of drunken revellers.

Author Tip

You're spoilt for choice in this area. One of the centre's most unusual sights is Borromini's famous perspective in the Galleria Spada. Discuss the great man's trickery over a plate of steaming pasta in one of the neighbourhood's many trattorie.
